Oops!!! Full recovery of Internet services on Jan 4

Telekom Malaysia Bhd (TM) said on Tuesday there was a delay in the restoration of Internet services following technical problems in repairing the submarine cable network linking Malaysia to Europe.

“Due to the delay, full recovery of Internet services is now expected to be on Jan 4, 2009,” TM said in a statement.

On Dec 20, TM said the disruption of its Internet services was due to circuit fault on the Southeast Asia – Middle East – Western Europe 4 (SMW4) submarine cable network between Palermo (Southern Italy) and Alexandria (Northern Egypt) linking Malaysia to Europe.

TM said there was a delay in the restoration of Internet services due to technical problems at the repairing stages.

It added that customers using Internet services might continue to experience slow browsing while accessing websites hosted in Europe.

Customers using other IP services such as Virtual Private Network (VPN) and other critical business applications linked to Europe may also experience some service degradation.

“To alleviate the problem, some of the links have been rerouted to alternate routes to ease the congestion,” it said.

TM assured its customers that it was undertaking all necessary measures to restore communications services for its customers as soon as possible.

Customers can call TM at 100 and select “Internet Services” or e-mail TM at help@tm.com.my for any Internet related problems. The Star - 12/30/2008 6:54:00 PM MYT

Just too long, mate!

AUSTRALIA Directed by Baz Luhrmann, Starring Nicole Kidman, Hugh Jackman, David Wenham, Bryan Brown, Jack Thompson, David Gulpilil, David Ngoombujarra, Brandon Walters
FIRST and foremost, make sure you are mentally well-rested for this movie as it is one long journey — almost three hours!

Australia, an epic romantic action adventure, is set on the brink of World War II.

It revolves around English aristocrat Lady Sarah Ashley (Nicole Kidman) who travels to Australia in search of her husband whom she believes is cheating on her.

During her journey through the breathtaking yet unforgiving terrain of Outback Australia, Sarah meets a rough cattleman, only known as “the drover” (Hugh Jackman), with whom she often finds herself at odds.

When a young orphan called Nullah (Brandon Walters), a half-aboriginal, half-Caucasian boy loses his mother, Sarah happily assumes the role.

Later, Sarah reluctantly joins forces with the drover to save Faraway Downs, the land which she inherited.

He helps her drive 1,500 cattle across Australia.

As if that isn’t enough, the Japanese, who had earlier attacked Pearl Harbour, attack Darwin.
War, cattle, action, adventure, love and romance... it seems that this movie has too much going on at times.

It is ambitious but we don’t think it will go down in movie history as a classic as it lacks a strong thread to hold it together.

Sure, there are great moments, for instance, the mass exodus of cattle stampeding through the beautiful yet brutal landscape, which is simply phenomenal, but there are also scenes which seem to have been borrowed from archives, such as the bombing of Pearl Harbour.

nst pix: Jackman (left) and Kidman are the pull factors for Australia.

Despite its shortcomings, it has its pull factors, namely, its cinematography, Kidman (right) and Jackman.

Having two famous Australian faces who have had a string of box-office hits does help.
Kidman’s portrayal of Sarah is probably her best work yet.

Even in her worst state, Sarah is a sight to behold. A pretty face compounded by a strong talent makes for a winning combination.

The scene involving her mothering Nullah is reminiscent of the late Princess Diana hugging leprosy patients. Simply moving and poignant.

With Jackman, his rugged good looks would make anyone want to be rescued by him.

There is also good chemistry between Kidman and Jackman and this help save an otherwise average outing.

Walters passes with flying colours as Nullah. He represents the child of an interracial society in which he is not accepted by any. One feels that this could be a story on its own.
All said, Australia is not a bad film. It is just way too long. -- By : Shuib Taib , NST’s Life & Times

Proton-Goldstar: Now Proton Says No Summons

Proton Holdings Bhd (5304 –ed.) has not been served with any summons by the Chinese joint venture (JV) partner, Goldstar Heavy Industrial Co Ltd, and therefore was not aware of the basis of the purported claim, it said in a reply to Bursa Malaysia query.

Bursa Malaysia queried the national carmaker on a news report that said Goldstar was claiming RM520 million from Proton for breach of contract.
[the Star daily said Wednesday (Dec 17, 2008) that Goldstar had started legal action in Guangdong province, seeking about 1.0 billion yuan in compensation over the failed venture, Malaysiakini news portal reported (AFP’s version here) – ed.]

Proton also confirmed the JV company still existed though it never commenced business operations due to the failure of Goldstar to meet its contractual obligations including procuring the necessary approvals from the relevant authorities in China.

“The parties have referred the dispute to arbitration, in accordance with the spirit of the JV agreement,” it said.

Proton’s JV collaboration, signed in early 2002, was to assemble Waja cars and make parts in China, tap the vibrant growth in the world's populous nation as well as cater to its neighbouring countries.
The JV involved Proton taking up a 49 per cent stake in Goldstar for RM85.5 million.Bernama via M/Insider

Forgetting grief in a troubled land

BEYOND RANGOON directed by John Boorman (Distributed by Alliance Entertainment (M) Sdn Bhd) Starring Patricia Arquette

THIS is that rare sort of film that grips you as you are drawn in, leaving you emotionally drained.

You are shocked, saddened, outraged — and relieved — by the time the movie ends.

John Boorman knows his stuff, and with a little help from a brilliant performance by Patricia Arquette, he delivers.
Set in Myanmar in 1988, it follows the story of grieving American tourist Dr Laura Bowman (Arquette), who is on holiday to help her come to terms with the recent murder of her husband and son. Alas, she loses her passport and finds herself stranded in Rangoon (Yangon) just as the army begins its infamous crackdown on pro-democracy demonstrators.

Soon after witnessing murders and brutality by the army against unarmed civilians, she flees from the country with a professor, monk and some dissident students, the army in hot pursuit.

As she fights for her survival and that of her companions, she learns to get over her loss and grief.
Beautifully filmed, even if a trifle heavy-handed in a couple of places, this movie has a spiritual quality about it.

It is said to be based on true incidents and in the special features section, Boorman and others make no bones about their support for Aung San Suu Kyi and her country's democracy movement.

So yes, this is a political film, as well as a powerful narrative. And if the background looks familiar, this is because much of the story was filmed in Malaysia.James Hipkiss via e-media.com

All in good spirit

Celebrities and captains of industry had a ball yesterday, playing against each other in a charity tennis event that raised RM75K.

TV show host Azura Zainal played her part with great gusto, not to mention she can execute a mean backhand as well.

Azura Zainal, who stopped playing tennis four years ago, said she enjoyed herself immensely.

"I had one goal in mind: keep the ball in the court and just have fun. It was an absolutely great opportunity to meet captains of industry whom I might normally not meet," said the Singapore-based Azura, who expressed amazement at how fit most of the CEOs were.

nst pix: Datuk Seri Kalimullah Hassan letting AirAsia CEO Datuk Seri Tony Fernandes (second from left) keep the Wilson K Factor racquet. With them are Azura Zainal (left) and Hans Isaac.

For AirAsia chief executive officer Datuk Seri Tony Fernandes, who rarely plays tennis, it was a flight through uncharted territory.

"Though this tournament saw some very high standard tennis played, I enjoyed it so much that I will probably take up tennis regularly from now.

"The main reason I joined this tournament was because it was charity-driven.

"However, the fact that I could help do some good while having fun is not a bad thing."
Lawn Tennis Association of Malaysia president Datuk Abdul Razak Latiff said they did it in the spirit of charity.

Kate Moss’ sex boost?

British supermodel Kate Moss has been seen clutching two bottles of what appears to be amyl nitrate, a drug used to enhance sexual pleasure.

The British supermodel arrived at her North London home holding two small plastic bottles - featuring a skull and crossbones warning on the lids, a design which bears a resemblance to the potent substance which is also known as 'poppers' - last night (10 Dec, 2008).

Legal drug amyl nitrate is also popular among clubbers who sniff the vapours to get a head rush. It is often combined with other drugs.

Earlier that day, Kate - who is dating rocker Jamie Hince - had left home to enjoy a shopping spree.

Upon her return, along with the two bottles, the 34-year-old supermodel was also carrying a bag containing exclusive Diptyque candles.

Kate isn't the only celebrity to be linked to poppers recently.
Sarah Symonds, who alleges she had a seven-year affair with Gordon Ramsay, claims the controversial TV chef used the substance during their sex sessions to enhance his performance in the bedroom. – Bang - Friday, 12 December 2008

Yazid dibebaskan bulan lepas, kata Syed Hamid.

–Malaysiakini - Dec 10, 08 4:01pm MYT

Bang!.. Kate Winslet's naked 'brink'

Kate Winslet says stripping naked in her new movie took her to the 'brink'.

The British beauty - who bares all in post-war drama 'The Reader' - found playing a former concentration camp guard in the film physically and emotionally draining.

She said: 'It really took me to the brink in many ways. To bring my character Hanna Schmitz to life was an absolutely enormous challenge and a huge responsibility as well, because it's a much-loved piece of German literature. Many people have differing opinions of Hanna Schmitz - they love her, they loathe her.'

Kate, whose character embarks in a relationship with a younger man in the movie, also revealed she had no problem filming the sex scenes with her 18-year-old co-star David Kross.

The 33-year-old actress explained to 'Entertainment Tonight': 'It was the same as shooting any other scene of that nature. A scene with that level of intimacy involving nudity, you know, it's always nerve-wracking, and you really have to rehearse those scenes so that everybody knows exactly what's going on. He didn't need that much looking after.'

'The Reader', which also stars Ralph Fiennes, is released worldwide in January. -- Bang - 12/8/2008 7:00 AM GMT

Proton-Mitsubishi: Reunion of old partners! ~ Malaysiakini

Dear Proton, Just a note to wish you every success in your new alliance. We’ve watched you do well through stock market…

afp: Malaysia's Proton announces big jump in profits

...and have every confidence that you’ll breeze through the next stage in your ambitious scheme. Your attitude towards these things is right, and you’ve got nothing to worry about.

Now back to your new ride!

[Malaysiakini Dec 5, 08 2:42pm]Malaysia's national carmarker Proton on Friday announced it has inked an agreement to develop a new vehicle with its former Japanese partner Mitsubishi Motors Corp.

Under the ambitious scheme, Proton, which is in need of advanced technology and auto designs in order to remain competitive, will use Mitsubishi expertise to develop a new model, it said in a statement to the stock exchange.

It said the alliance would also allow the two companies to improve component quality for Proton vehicles, and explore options for exports and contract assembly.

Mitsubishi Motors was a former Proton shareholder and helped the state-controlled firm make its first cars more than two decades ago. It sold its stake in 2004.

For Mitsubishi Motors, Japan's fourth-biggest carmaker, the deal would provide a springboard to expand its business in Malaysia, Southeast Asia's biggest passenger car market.

Proton was formed 25 years ago by former premier Mahathir Mohamad as part of an ambitious national industrialisation plan, but its market share has slumped in recent years as it flailed in a newly deregulated market.

It has also suffered from a reputation for unimaginative models and poor quality that has left it struggling to compete against Japanese and European carmakers.

The government has urged it to forge a partnership with a foreign automaker to give it the expertise and economies of scale that it needs to survive.

However, talks with Volkswagen and General Motors have collapsed, with the stumbling block reputed to be demands for a stake in Proton. The Mitsubishi deal does not include any ownership changes.Agence France-Presse - 12/5/2008 6:42 AM GMT

Rowling waves her magic wand again

The author of the phenomenally successful Harry Potter series, J.K. Rowling, publishes her new book on Thursday, an event expected to spark midnight queues at shops for the collection of short stories.

Rowling brought out the final book in the seven-tome Potter series 18 months ago, but publishers promise that "The Tales of Beedle the Bard" provides an insight into the characters and their wizardry.

The British author made a fortune from the tales of the boy wizard, but all the proceeds from "The Tales of Beedle the Bard" will go to the charity she co-founded to improve life for children in institutional homes in eastern Europe.

Publishers are widely expecting the initial print run of 7.5 million copies to be snapped up quickly when the book goes on sale in more than 20 countries including Britain, the United States, France, Germany, China and Japan.

"We think it will appeal to established Harry Potter fans, but also to people who want to do something for charity," said Amy MacLaren, a spokeswoman for the charity, Children's High Level Group (CHLG).

The charity said it would receive a total of 1.61 pounds (1.90 euro, 2.05 dollars) from each book sold in Britain, and an equivalent amount from foreign sales.

Rowling will host a tea party in her home city of Edinburgh to launch the book on Friday.

She produced seven original handwritten copies, giving away six to people involved with the Potter books and auctioning the seventh a year ago, which was bought for 1.95 million pounds (2.3 million euros, 2.9 million dollars) by online retailer Amazon.

Amazon has placed reviews of the five short stories on its website, promising that they "read like Aesop's fables and echo the themes of the (Potter) series".

Each story is followed by commentary by Albus Dumbledore, the white-bearded headmaster of the Hogwarts school where Potter and his friends learn their spells. --Agence France-Presse via MSN
