PKR moots regional Islamic body as throwing shoes won't stop missiles

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 12 –
As Parliament continued to censure the Israeli and United States governments over the Gaza conflict, PKR today mooted the idea of a regional Islamic body to flex its political muscle in the Muslim world.

MPs had expressed frustration over the powerlessness of the public to compel the United States and Israel to bring a halt to the Israeli attacks on Palestinians in the Gaza strip that has continued for nearly three weeks.

Pas president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang said that "throwing shoes cannot stop Tomahawk missiles," to illustrate the lack of a political solution.

De Facto PKR leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim proposed in Parliament today that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Badawi negotiate with other Muslim nations in the region such as Indonesia and Brunei to do something meaningful.

"This will encourage Arab leaders to do more than just have to beg for mercy," he said.
In a press conference later, he added that as Indonesia is the world's largest Muslim country and "an important democratic country that is considered moderate," with an independent foreign policy, a regional coalition could have "a definite influence on the world, as Arab countries may be considered emotionally vested in such issues."

"We must take our own stand as the anger of the public has been made known so it is incumbent upon our leaders to react," he said.

Selangor Menteri Besar and former PKR secretary-general Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim added more details on the suggestion in his speech in Parliament later.

"A task force with a formal secretariat should be formed to meet and mobilise initiatives with other Islamic nations," he said.

He said that by taking an active role, holding talks and discussions with other governments, a regional body could lobby for concerted efforts to curb future atrocities against Muslim nations.

Khalid suggested that foreign ministers could lead the secretariat to ensure eminent persons from each of the three Southeast Asian countries would represent their respective governments when speaking to other parties. – text: By Shannon Teoh, The Malaysian Insider, graphic: b-g

Oops!!! Full recovery of Internet services on Jan 4

Telekom Malaysia Bhd (TM) said on Tuesday there was a delay in the restoration of Internet services following technical problems in repairing the submarine cable network linking Malaysia to Europe.

“Due to the delay, full recovery of Internet services is now expected to be on Jan 4, 2009,” TM said in a statement.

On Dec 20, TM said the disruption of its Internet services was due to circuit fault on the Southeast Asia – Middle East – Western Europe 4 (SMW4) submarine cable network between Palermo (Southern Italy) and Alexandria (Northern Egypt) linking Malaysia to Europe.

TM said there was a delay in the restoration of Internet services due to technical problems at the repairing stages.

It added that customers using Internet services might continue to experience slow browsing while accessing websites hosted in Europe.

Customers using other IP services such as Virtual Private Network (VPN) and other critical business applications linked to Europe may also experience some service degradation.

“To alleviate the problem, some of the links have been rerouted to alternate routes to ease the congestion,” it said.

TM assured its customers that it was undertaking all necessary measures to restore communications services for its customers as soon as possible.

Oops!!! Internet services disrupted until Dec 31

Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) has reported a disruption in its Internet services due to circuit faults on the submarine cable network linking Malaysia and Europe, and said the services would be completely restored by Dec 31.

TM said in a statement Sunday that customers using its Internet services may experience slow browsing.

Access to websites hosted in Europe and that those using other IP (Internet Protocol) services such as Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) and other critical business applications linked to Europe may also experience some service degradation.

It said the affected cables, on the Southeast Asia-Middle East-Western Europe 4 (SMW4) submarine network between Palermo in southern Italy and Alexandria in northern Egypt, were being repaired and that some of the links had meanwhile been rerouted to ease congestion.

During the restoration process, traffic to northern America may experience minor degradation while traffic to other countries is unaffected, it said.

Proton-Mitsubishi: Reunion of old partners! ~ Malaysiakini

Dear Proton, Just a note to wish you every success in your new alliance. We’ve watched you do well through stock market…

afp: Malaysia's Proton announces big jump in profits

...and have every confidence that you’ll breeze through the next stage in your ambitious scheme. Your attitude towards these things is right, and you’ve got nothing to worry about.

Now back to your new ride!

[Malaysiakini Dec 5, 08 2:42pm]Malaysia's national carmarker Proton on Friday announced it has inked an agreement to develop a new vehicle with its former Japanese partner Mitsubishi Motors Corp.

Under the ambitious scheme, Proton, which is in need of advanced technology and auto designs in order to remain competitive, will use Mitsubishi expertise to develop a new model, it said in a statement to the stock exchange.

It said the alliance would also allow the two companies to improve component quality for Proton vehicles, and explore options for exports and contract assembly.

Mitsubishi Motors was a former Proton shareholder and helped the state-controlled firm make its first cars more than two decades ago. It sold its stake in 2004.

For Mitsubishi Motors, Japan's fourth-biggest carmaker, the deal would provide a springboard to expand its business in Malaysia, Southeast Asia's biggest passenger car market.

Proton was formed 25 years ago by former premier Mahathir Mohamad as part of an ambitious national industrialisation plan, but its market share has slumped in recent years as it flailed in a newly deregulated market.

It has also suffered from a reputation for unimaginative models and poor quality that has left it struggling to compete against Japanese and European carmakers.

The government has urged it to forge a partnership with a foreign automaker to give it the expertise and economies of scale that it needs to survive.

However, talks with Volkswagen and General Motors have collapsed, with the stumbling block reputed to be demands for a stake in Proton. The Mitsubishi deal does not include any ownership changes.Agence France-Presse - 12/5/2008 6:42 AM GMT
